William Matthew Lawrence, 28, a proud logger of Eastern North Carolina, and a long time employee of Emanuel Hoggard Logging, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2026. Leaving behind a legacy of hard work, loyalty, and a life rooted in the land he loved.
Matt was born in Elizabeth City, NC on July 23, 1997 and was the son of the late Jayme and Mike Lawrence. Along with his parents he is preceded in death by his grandfather, Bill Lawrence.
Known to many as "Fat Matt," he was no stranger to long days and tough conditions, dedicating his life to logging—a trade that demands grit, strength, and resilience. He took pride in his work and the life he built through it, earning the respect of those who knew him both on and off the job.
Beyond his work, Matt will be remembered for his personality, his stories, his goofy laugh, and the way he connected with people in his own unique way. He leaves behind his beloved daughter, Madelynn Lawrence, who was an important part of his life.
Matt is survived by his daughter, Madelynn Lawrence; grandmother, Frances Lawrence; other family members, Cheyenne Jones Lawrence and Edna Wilson; and close friends, the mother of Madelynn, Kayla Buhls, Eric Buhls, Amy Boyd, Michael McNeal, and Lauren Hardy.
