William Mehring Barnes, Jr.

 William Mehring “Billy” Barnes, Jr., 65, of 219 Tip Toe Road, Edenton, NC, passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2024 in his home where he was being cared for by family.

 Mr. Barnes was born in Easton, PA on January 18, 1959, and was the son of the late William Mehring Barnes, Sr. and Barbara Gibson Zuccarini. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Anzio Barnes, and by his stepfather, Albert Zuccarini.

 Employed as a Grocery Manager with S & R and later Food Lion for many years, he attended and enjoyed fellowship in Oak Grove Baptist Church. Known by many as “Treetop”, he was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish.

 Surviving is his wife of nearly 36 years, Anita Briggs-Barnes; three sisters, Carol Twiddy Phelps (Sam) of Creswell, Barbara Tarkington (Wayne) and Jane Haddow-Green, both of Greenville; two brothers, Johnny Barnes (Karen) of Creswell and Greg Barnes (Dan Pastula) of Denver, CO; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

 A memorial service will be held Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in Oak Grove Baptist Church and will be conducted by Pastor J.N. Worsley and The Rev. Edwin Basnight. Friends may visit with the family in the social hall of the church the hour prior to the service on Saturday, and other times at the home of Carol and Sam Phelps, 2041 Ambrose Road, Creswell.

 In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made either to Oak Grove Church, in care of Amy Clifton, Treasurer, 208 N. 6th Street, Creswell, NC 27928, or the American Kidney Fund, 11921 Rockville Pike, Suite 300, Rockville, MD 20852, or to any chapter of the American Cancer Society.
