Obituary

Welcome A. “Bill” Eddy, age 92, a beloved husband and cherished member of our family, passed away peacefully at his residence on Sunday, August 6, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, service, and music.

Of all the things that brought him joy, none was more precious to him than his beloved wife, Melva Perrot-Eddy, whom he lovingly called his “sweetheart.” Bill never seemed to tire of telling her how much he loved her. Their love was a beautiful and enduring part of his life, and those who knew them could see how deeply devoted he was to her.

Bill was also deeply proud of his years of service in the United States Navy. His time in the Navy was an important part of his life, and he carried that pride with him throughout the years.

His faith was another treasured part of who he was. He loved singing in the church choir, sharing his voice and his love of music with his family and church family. His singing was more than just a pastime—it was one of the ways he expressed his joy, his faith, and his love for others.

Bill left Alabama in 1954, was a member of the United States Navy until 1959, he graduated from Old Dominion College in 1963, and retired from the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority in December 1997.

Survivors include his loving wife, Melva Perrot Eddy; daughter, Monica Jones; extended family, Catherine Faulkner and husband, Donnie, Cheryl Richardson and husband, Russell, Susan Kimsey and husband, Eddie, Jane Slade and husband, Leo, and Steve Perrot and wife, Michelle; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Louis J. Eddy and Novel Eddy; brothers, James Harley Eddy, Henry Holle’s Eddy, and Felton L. Eddy; sisters, Ila Mae Marks, Myrtle Tolbert, and Faye Kelly; wife, Mary M. Eddy; and daughter, Donna Chester.

The family would like to extend our deepest and most heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers who cared for him with such compassion, patience, and love. Their kindness and dedication brought comfort and dignity to his final days, and we will forever be grateful for the way they not only cared for him, but came to know and love him. They became a special part of his life and of our family, and their love will never be forgotten.

Funeral services celebrating Bill’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2026 at the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Trey Rogers officiating. Entombment with military honors will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, September 14, 2026 at the Rosewood Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, Virginia Beach, VA.
