Velma Layden Owens

   Velma Faye Layden Owens, 100, of Wilmington, NC, and formerly a longtime resident of Hertford, NC, passed away Sunday, September 17, 2023 in North Chase Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Wilmington.

   Mrs. Owens was born in Perquimans County on August 19, 1923, and was the daughter of the late Thomas Parker Layden and Luna Ester Winslow Layden. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Carroll Layden (wife, Mary Elizabeth, deceased).

   Employed for many years as an accounting clerk with Jackson Wholesale in Hertford, one of her greatest joys in life was traveling and seeing different places, especially the times spent visiting Calabash, NC.

   Surviving are her three nephews, Thomas Layden (wife, Colleen) of Wilmington, David Layden (wife, Melissa) of Latrobe, PA, and William Layden (wife, Tina) of Ligonier, PA; and several great-nieces, great-nephews, and extended family members.

   A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 30, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. in the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Chapel, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford. Friends may visit with the family in the funeral home immediately following the service. An inurnment will follow in the Layden Family Cemetery, Belvidere Road, Belvidere.
