Thomas Wilton Ward, Sr., affectionately known as “Tom,” passed away peacefully at the age of 86 on May 15, 2026, at his daughter’s home in Winterville, NC, with his wife, Margie, by his side.
Born in Chowan County, North Carolina, Tom was the son of the late Charles Richard Ward and Lula Mae Mansfield Ward. A hardworking and respected businessman, Tom founded Dixie Auto Parts in Sunbury, North Carolina, in 1976. Through dedication, integrity, and determination, he built not only a successful business but lasting friendships throughout the community. Tom handed the business down to his son, Tommy, to carry on the family legacy.
On January 27, 1962, Tom married the love of his life, Margie Ward. Together they shared a lifetime of love, devotion, and cherished memories. Tom especially enjoyed camping and traveling with Margie, and the two built a life centered on faith, family, and friendship.
Tom had a lifelong passion for the early years of NASCAR racing and enjoyed following the sport throughout his life. He was also a faithful member of Middle Swamp Baptist Church in Corapeake, North Carolina, where he served as a deacon for many years. His faith guided his life, and he was known for his servant’s heart, steady wisdom, and dedication to both his church and community.
A proud Mason, Tom was recently honored for 60 years of membership with the Masonic Lodge in Hertford, North Carolina, reflecting his lifelong commitment to fellowship, service, and community. Those who knew Tom will remember his strong work ethic, generous spirit, quiet kindness, and willingness to help anyone in need.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles Henry Ward and John Richard ‘Pete’ Ward and a sister, Kathryne Ann Ward Winslow.
He is survived by his loving wife of many years, Margie White Ward; sons, Thomas Wilton Ward, Jr (Lisa), Charles Kevin Ward and daughter, Annette Ward Friel; grandchildren, Spencer Lynn Smith (Gretchen), Thomas Copeland Ward (Nicole), Amy Smith Stalcup; great-grandchildren, Makayla Lynn Smith, Tilian Rose Stalcup, Berkley Collins Ward and Hayes Copeland Ward.
A celebration of Tom’s life will be held on May 18,2026 at Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home in Hertford, NC at 11:00 am. Visitation will be held at Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home at 10:00 am.
Thomas Wilton Ward, Sr., leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, hard work, friendship, and dedication to his family and community. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
