Thomas Dabolt
Hertford, NC | Formerly of Clarence Center, NY Passed away April 28, 2026.
Thomas Dabolt, a man defined by his adventurous spirit, meticulous craftsmanship, and unwavering devotion to his family, passed away suddenly on April 28, 2026. He was the beloved husband of his high school sweetheart, Barbara (Witzel) Dabolt, with whom he shared nearly 60 years of marriage, adventure, and loving companionship.
From his earliest days, Tom chased the horizon. As a Scout, one of his most legendary feats was canoeing the entire length of the Erie Canal to the Hudson River and down into New York City—a journey so remarkable the scouts were greeted by Governor Nelson Rockefeller. This love for the water never faded; as a dedicated Boy Scout leader, he guided scouts on ambitious canoe expeditions through the Adirondack wilderness and the rugged terrain of Algonquin National Park in Canada.
Raised as one of nine children in Kenmore, NY, Tom learned his lifelong work ethic. He was a "perfectionist" carpenter by trade, but his true legacy lay in the classroom. As a gifted teacher, he possessed the rare ability to tackle any subject or challenge, earning the lasting respect of his students through his signature patience and genuine empathy for their struggles. Beyond the classroom, Tom was a pillar of his community, establishing a new Cub Scout Pack, Committee man for the Boy Scout Troop and helping to establish a teen center in Clarence, NY, to provide local youth with a place to belong.
In his retirement, Tom and Barb traveled the world together, exploring the states and far-flung corners of the globe. He spent the last quarter of his life in Hertford, NC, where he found peace in the nature of the waterfront. He remained active until the end, volunteering his time building elaborate sets for Encore, the local theatre company and always being the first to "lend a hand" to a neighbor in need.
Tom will be remembered most for his tireless work ethic, his wonderful sense of humor, and his profound love for his family.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; his devoted son, Tod Dabolt; his cherished grandchildren, Emma Dabolt, Ella Dabolt, Sylvia Meade, and Dominik Meade; and his sister Marge Dabolt Davis (Walter Davis).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Tom’s memory to Albermarle Alliance for Children and Families, 1403 Parkview Drive, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. Attention Faith Mosely. (Donations can also be made by having a tree planted in Tom’s name.)
