Sybil Broughton-Lucks, 91, died under the loving care of her family on Tuesday, March 22, 2022. Sybil Chappell was born November 26, 1930, in Perquimans County, North Carolina to Pastor Ralph Benjamin and Helen Dough Chappell. She married Sidney “Big Man” Broughton, and they settled in Wilmington, Delaware with their four boys—David, Sidney, Christopher, and Peter.
Throughout her time in Delaware, Sybil was a successful realtor and avid bridge player, winning the Delaware State Championship. It was over a game of bridge that she went on to meet George Lucks, with whom she shared a short but happy marriage. She also loved to travel and went all over the world. She traveled as often as she could with her sister, Viola; lifelong friend, Lil; niece, Gloria; and friend, Nancy.
Sybil moved west to Reno, Nevada to help care for her grandchildren. While in Reno, she worked at JCPenney, continued to play bridge, and spent her free time at the slots. She later moved to Spokane, Washington, with her son, Sid, to be a part of her great grandchildren growing up. Eventually, she returned to settle in Reno.
Though these events are the pillars of her life, Sybil’s magic was in the small moments. She carried herself like nobility and made herself available to help whomever she could. Her “Hello?” as she answered the phone was iconic and often imitated but never duplicated. She had a unique accent—a mix of small town North Carolina and the upper echelon of Wilmington, Delaware. She was gracious, humble, and unwaveringly optimistic. To know her was to love her.
Sybil is preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Helen; daughter, Susan; husbands, Sidney and George; and sister, Viola. She is lovingly survived and will be greatly missed by her four sons, David, Sidney, Christopher, and Peter; three stepchildren, Gordon, Gary, and Lisa; six grandchildren, Erin, Alex and his wife Narumi, Linlee, Katie, Lacey, and Andrew; four great grandchildren, Gavin, Nike, Landon, and Kona; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Sybil only ever wanted to be around her people. Later in her life, her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren often traveled from around the west coast to visit her. They could usually be found piled into her bedroom, sitting on any available surface, laughing and sharing memories with Sybil in the center of the circle. She was happiest surrounded by family. To ensure she will always be near those she loved, Sybil will be buried at Cedarwood Cemetery in Hertford, North Carolina.
