Obituary

It is with profound sadness that the family announces the sudden passing of Steven Byrum. Known as “Heavy” by those closest to him, he was born in Edenton in 1964 to Coy “CD” Byrum and Barbara Cobb Byrum. In addition to his parents, Heavy was predeceased by his younger sister, Rebecca Byrum.

He enjoyed the rural life of Merry Hill, fishing in nearby creeks and rivers and hunting the abundant wildlife across the region. A significant early component of his life involved automotive work - enhancing performance, repairing and maintaining anything on wheels. He found success in racing and power competitions, though what mattered most was how much he loved it. This part of his youth led to a life-long career in welding and mechanics. His professional contributions found a home at Barnhill Contracting Company, where he spent more than 33 years of mechanical problem-solving and keeping things running.

He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Britt Byrum, with whom he shared some of the happiest moments of his life. Also surviving Heavy are his cousins, Burl Domecq of Williamston and Coy Domecq of Colerain, who were more like brothers. Extended adopted family members include lifelong friends and colleagues, like all of us, who are fortunate enough to have known Heavy and to have him as part of their lives.

Heavy will be remembered for his loyalty, his skill, his humor, and the unmistakable presence he brought into every room, garage, and gathering. His absence leaves a space that cannot be filled, but his impact will be carried forward by all who knew and loved him.

The family would like to acknowledge the prompt and caring attention exhibited by the Bertie County emergency first-responder team members. In addition, overwhelming gratitude is extended to the work family of Barnhill Contracting Company for their immediate and heartfelt support during this difficult time.

The family will receive friends on Saturday May 2 from 1:00 to 2:00 pm at Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 pm in the chapel. There will be no graveside service. In keeping with Heavy’s preference, casual attire is encouraged.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to any Bertie County Emergency Service organization of your choice.
