Sophia Elaine Perry Sumner, 96, of Ahoskie, NC passed away Thursday, March 19, 2026 in Williamston, NC. Sophia was born in Bertie County, NC on October 6, 1929 and was the daughter of the late George Hymon Perry and Betty White Perry.
She is preceded in death by her husband Grady W. Sumner Jr. of 67 years; and siblings McNeal Ball, George Perry, Dan Perry, Annie Mae McGee, and Sara Milbert.
Sophia was a devoted member of Fist Baptist Church of Ahoskie, where she was actively involved in church life for many years, forming lasting friendships and generously offering her time and service. She dedicated over 40 years of hard work and loyalty to Greene, Bryant & Joyner Insurance Agency, earning the respect and admiration of colleagues and clients alike. In recognition of her contributions to the community, she was named Woman of the Year by the Ahoskie Chamber of Commerce in 1995. In retirement, she found great joy in her walking group, cherishing both the activity and the companionship it provided. Above all, she treasured the time she spent with her beloved grandchildren, who where truly the light of her life.
Sophia is survived by her children, Perry Sumner and wife Janet Sumner, Elaine Beckman and husband Ralph Beckman, Sharon Tate and husband Rick Tate; grandchildren, Adam Beckman and wife Karly Beckman, Ashley Beckman, Courtney Abrams and husband Thomas Abrams, and Sumner Tate and wife Jordan; and five great grandchildren, Magnolia Lorine Beckman, Charlotte Sophia Abrams, Tate Harrison Abrams, Karson Ratliff and Maeve Sophia Beckman.
A celebration of life service will be held at First Baptist Church of Ahoskie on April 18, at 2:00pm and will be officiated by Reverend Anita Thompson. The family will greet guest prior to the service in the fellowship hall starting at 1:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, donation can be made to First Baptist Church of Ahoskie.
