Sonia Irizarry Schmidt

   Sonia Ivette Irizarry Schmidt, 76, of Edenton, NC, passed away Monday, January 9, 2023 in her home.

   Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico on July 28, 1946, she was the daughter of the President of the Industrial Commission in Puerto Rico, the late Senator Armando Schmidt and Pura Irizarry. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Harry, Eddie, Kermit, and Wally Schmidt.

  Retired from the Materials and Testing Department of the NC Department of Transportation, she was an avid animal lover.

   Surviving is her daughter, Michelle Burgess (husband, Christopher) of Edenton; three grandchildren, Douglas Copeland (wife, Veronica), and Samantha and Jacob Burgess; and her dear friend, Francis Champion and her family.

   A private service will be held by the family.
