Shirley Darlene Twine Brickhouse, a cherished resident of Hertford, NC, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 18th, 2026, at the age of 68. Born in Chowan, NC on October 21st, 1957, Darlene lived a life enriched with love for her family and community.

Darlene was a dedicated homemaker who took pride in creating a warm and nurturing home. Her kindness and compassion were felt by everyone who knew her. Darlene was a classy lady who 'loved to get all dolled up' as well as traveling and enjoying her favorite TV shows with a bowl of popcorn during her evenings.

She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Joseph Curtis "Jake" Twine and Mary Magaline Twine, as well as her beloved husband, Lyman Felton Brickhouse. Siblings, Gail Cooper and her husband Irvin, Charlotte Pipes and her husband Harold, and Linda Carter and her husband Raymond "Ray".

Darlene is survived by her children, Joseph Manning of Elizabeth City, and his wife Lynne Manning. She is also survived by her devoted stepchildren: Doug Brickhouse and his wife Deborah of Elizabeth City, and Troy Brickhouse and his wife Chrystal. Darlene was a proud grandmother to her grandchildren Heath Brickhouse, married to Ashley of New Hope, Courtney Brickhouse, Daniel Brickhouse, Ashley Brickhouse of Chowan county, Kimberly Rollinson, married to Brandon of Perquimans County, Haley Davenport, married to Mason of Elizabeth City, Troy Brickhouse Jr. of Elizabeth City, and Dylan Brewer.

Her legacy continues with her great-grandchildren: Danielle Brickhouse, Colton Brickhouse, Elijah Brickhouse, Cayson Rollinson, Kinsley Burgess, Allory Rollinson, and Brycen Rollinson.

Family and friends will gather to honor Darlene's memory on Thursday, August 27th, 2026. Visitation will be held from 2:00pm-3:00pm at the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home in Hertford, NC. A memorial service will follow at 3:00pm in the same location.
