Shelvia Faye Ambrose Owens, 85, of Plymouth, NC, passed away Thursday, March 16, 2023 in her daughter's home in Pantego where she was being cared for by family.
Mrs. Owens was born in Martin County on February 21, 1938, and was the daughter of the late Wilson Eldridge Ambrose and Sudie Anna Lewis Ambrose. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Delmar Clarence Owens, Sr.; a son-in-law, John Sawyer; a step-daughter, Shelia Owens; sisters, Eula Watson, Peggy Spruill, Emma Biggs, Margaret Harrell, and Janis Smith; and by her brothers, William, Robert, Gene, Henry, and L. Earl Ambrose.
A retired Teacher's Assistant from Tyrrell County Schools, she had also been a school bus driver, and in years past coached girls sports in both basketball and softball. She was a member of Williams Primitive Baptist Church in Edgecombe County.
Surviving are her two daughters, Shelvia Denise Owens Sawyer (Mike Harris) of Plymouth and Michelle Renee Owens Lawrence (David, Sr.) of Pantego; a step-son, Delmar Clarence Owens, Jr. of Columbia; a sister, Ruth Ambrose Styons of Plymouth; five grandchildren, Elizabeth (Sam), Cody (Cassandra), Tina (Chris), Jonathan (Jessica), and David, Jr.; three step-grandchildren, Michael (Penny), Joy (Mike) and Kim; five great-grandchildren, Christian, Raelynne. Eleanor, John, and Wyatt; and a step-great-granddaughter, Hadley.
A graveside service will be held Monday at 4:00 p.m. in Azalea Memorial Gardens, 4398 NC 94, Columbia, and will be conducted by Elder Johnny Ray Gardner. Friends may visit with the family Sunday from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and other times at Michelle and David's home, 8941 Railroad Bed Road, Pantego.
