   Sarah Mae Copeland Lassiter, 95, of 059 Catherines Creek Road, Hobbsville, NC passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2024, in her home where she was cared for by her family.

   Sarah Mae was born and raised in the Ryland community of Chowan County and was the daughter of the late Ervin and Rosa Chappell Copeland. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank R. Lassiter, Sr.; sisters, infant Villa Rae Copeland, Rev. Eula Harrell, and Onita Temple; and by brothers, Vivian, and Ervin Copeland, Jr.

   A 1947 graduate of Chowan High School, Sarah Mae went on to work in a variety of areas including, Cannons Ferry Roe Packing, as a clerk in a Dime Store, the Crown Zipper Factory in Newport News, pressing collars at the Shirt Factory in Hertford, and as a forelady at Planters Peanuts. With her husband and family, she worked on the farm with produce and livestock, then later as an in-home caregiver for numerous elderly people in the community. Her family and friends were always close to her heart.

   A faithful member of Happy Home Pentecostal Church, she was an active member of the Adult Sunday School Class, the Ladies Auxiliary, and the Young at Heart Group until her health declined.

   Surviving are her children, John Lassiter (Michael) of Manassas, VA, Sarah Williams (Murray) of Hobbsville, Susie Jones (Chuck) of Elizabeth City, and Frank Lassiter, Jr. of Hobbsville; a brother, Lessell Copeland of Belvidere; a sister, Vertie Blanchard of Tyner; four grandchildren, Beth Copeland (James) of Tyner, Adam Williams of Eure, Kristen Scott (Hunter) of Plymouth, and Charles Jones of Philadelphia, PA; and seven great-grandchildren, Mason and Sage Copeland, Gabriel, Tobias, and Aurora Williams, and Annabelle and Charlotte Scott. Another great-grandchild from the Scott family is due to be born in November.

   Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in Happy Home Pentecostal Holiness Church and will be conducted by Pastor Walter Byrum. The burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends are invited to join the family on Saturday from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, or all other times at the residence.

   The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the Albemarle Meals on Wheels program, her niece Catherine Taylor, and to the staff of Gentiva Hospice for assisting in her care.
