Salvatore John Calvano

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Salvatore John Calvano, beloved husband, father and grandfather. Known to everyone as John he passed away on Thursday, August 13th, 2026 at the age of 83, in Norfolk, Va.

Born on Wednesday, March 10th, 1943, in the borough of Brooklyn, New York, John was the cherished son of the late Gerald Calvano and Filomena Buoniello. 

John demonstrated his unwavering dedication to his country by proudly serving in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, where he exemplified the discipline and values that wouldnbecome hallmarks of his life.

An entrepreneur, John owned and operated a successful business, L.C.F.G. a commercial furniture marketing firm, earning the respect and admiration of colleagues, employees and the community alike. His work was not just a profession but a testament to his passion, loyalty and commitment to excellence.

John loved living in Albemarle Plantation or as he called it “The Commune.” Every day he could be seen driving around in his golf cart with Naive, his little black and white dog, at his side visiting his friends.

He loved driving his Corvette, playing poker, golf and shooting his firearms but most of all he cherished his friendships with all the people he had met over 70 years. John had a big personality, he never stopped making people laugh, he was greatly loved and will be sorely missed.

Johns most treasured role was that of a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Phyllis Calvano, his sons, Jonathan Calvano of Hertford, N.C. and James Calvano (wife Nakiah) of Laurelville, OH and grandchildren Kiara, Salvatore, Azlin and Bella.

To honor and celebrate John’s life, arrangements have been entrusted to Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Homes & Crematory in Hertford, N.C.
