Roger Copeland Spivey, 87, of 345 Gliden Road, Hobbsville, NC, died Sunday, December 3, 2023 in ECU Health Chowan Hospital, Edenton.
Mr. Spivey was born in Chowan County on April 29, 1936 and was the son of the late Jacob Saunders Spivey and Oscar Copeland “Ossie” Spivey. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death just 10 days ago by his wife of nearly 64 years, Mae Boyce Spivey.
A 1954 graduate of Chowan High School, he attended North Carolina State University, and graduated in 1958 from Campbell College and in 1960 from East Carolina Teacher’s College, now both universities. Employed with the North Carolina Forest Service, he served as Chowan County’s Forest Ranger for 37 years. After retiring, he worked with Albemarle Land & Timber Services, cruising timber and replanting cutovers with pine saplings. Roger was so blessed to work in what he loved best, an outdoors office.
A faithful member and deacon of Warwick Baptist Church, other areas of service included his being a founding member of the Gliden Unit 2 Volunteer Rescue Squad, the North Carolina National Guard, and working with area fire departments in both training and fighting forest fires.
His family will always remember Roger expressing his love for God, his children, and all his family. Surviving are his daughter, Desiree Spivey Blanchard (husband, Rube) of Hobbsville; his son, Roger Kelly Spivey (wife, Jennifer) of Washington, NC; and his sister, Loretta Spivey Wiggins (husband, Joseph) of Midlothian, VA. He was “Poppy” to five grandchildren, Melinda Erin Forward (Jason), Aaron Hunter Blanchard (Vanessa), and Jacob Thomas, Graham Dixon, and Layton Paul Spivey; and two great-grandchildren, Caroline Mae and Bryson Kelly Forward.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. in Warwick Baptist Church and will be conducted by the Rev. Russell Blanchard. The burial will follow in the Spivey family plot at the church. Friends may visit with the family in the social hall immediately following the service, or all other times at the residence.
His wishes were that flowers be omitted, and contributions in his memory be made to the Chowan Development Council, P.O. Box 629, Edenton, NC 27932 for its use in the continued support of the patient Comfort Care Unit of ECU Health Chowan Hospital, or to Warwick Baptist Church, 4314 Virginia Road, Hobbsville, NC 27946 for its use in the Vacation Bible School program, or to one’s favorite charity.
