Roy Walter Dail, 96, of 229 Jordan Loop Road, Tyner, passed away Thursday, April 30, 2026 in his home. Mr. Dail was born in Perquimans County on November 18, 1929, and was the son of the late Walter and Laura Copeland Dail. Roy was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Germany during the Korean War. He was a Machinist at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and later at Pensacola Naval Air Station. Described as a, "tinker and inventor," Roy enjoyed woodworking in his shop, exploring history and museums, and reading. Steadfast in his faith, he was a member of Lighthouse Tabernacle in Tyner.
Surviving are his wife of seven years, Carrie Chappell Dail; four daughters, Sharon Pendleton and her husband, Glenn of Elizabeth City, Cheryl Meads and her husband, Steve of Elizabeth City, Brenda Stumpf and her husband, John of Molino, FL, and Janet Powell and her husband, Rick of Tomball, TX; a sister, Ruby Saunders of Hertford; two brothers, James W. Dail of Hertford and Clarence "Teeny" Dail of Tyner; fourteen grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Dawn Lupton Dail; two brothers, Hubert Dail and Murray Dail; and a great-grandson, Owen Stumpf.
The family will receive friends on Monday, May 4th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford. A Funeral Service with Military Honors will be held Tuesday, May 5th at 2:00 pm at the funeral home and will be conducted by Pastor Irvin Ambrose and Pastor Derek Jones. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lighthouse Tabernacle's Building Fund, 3818 Virginia Rd, Tyner, NC 27980, or to the Copeland Family Cemetery, c/o Sandra Long, 279 Hunters Fork Road, Tyner, NC 27980.
