Robert Joseph O'Hara, 88, of the Snug Harbor community of Hertford, NC, passed away Thursday, September 12, 2024 in his home where he was surrounded by his family. He was a pillar of strength to his family and friends, whose exceptional character was evident to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Mr. O'Hara was born in Dorchester, MA on July 29, 1936 and was the son of the late Ernest Anthony Joseph O'Hara and Marion Frances Harvey O'Hara Scott. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Virgil Scott, his wife, Ann Marie Gould O'Hara, and by a brother, Richard Scott.
He lived a life of noble service as a Senior Master Sergeant and bronze star recipient who served in the US Air Force from 1954 to 1974, and later as a dedicated Federal Fire Department Captain at Naval Station Norfolk which he retired from with 22 years of service. His impact will be cherished. An avid sports fan, he loved everything Boston and was an ardent supporter of all his favorite teams including the Boston Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins and New England Patriots. He had a love of playing softball, basketball and racquetball. A member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Edenton, in earlier years he had also enjoyed membership in the Edward G. Bond Post 40 of the American Legion.
Surviving is his daughter, Mary Elizabeth O'Hara Case (husband, Robert, Jr.) of New Bern; his son, Robert Joseph O'Hara, Jr. (wife, Lisa) of Hertford; three grandchildren, Krystal Garcia (husband, Andres), Sean O'Hara (wife, Kelly), and Matthew Case; and three great-grandchildren, Trinity, Aubrey, and Ellis.
In accordance with his wishes, a celebration of his life will be held at later date.
