Robert Louis “Bobby” Hollowell, Jr., 76, of Hertford, NC, passed away Tuesday, April 8, 2025, in W.R. Winslow Memorial Home, Elizabeth City, after a recent decline in health.
Mr. Hollowell was born in Pasquotank County on April 12, 1948, and was the son of the late Robert Louis, Sr. and Polly Cely Hollowell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Diane Ross.
Bobby was a graduate of N.C. State University where he was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. Through the years he owned and operated several automotive sales businesses, most recently River City Motors in Hertford. In addition, he had a creative mind and enjoyed the challenges of designing new gadgets. Bobby invented, produced, and marketed a tool inventory device called “Tool Minder.” Other enjoyments included his love of music and writing songs, most notably “The Catfish Kid (The Ballad of Jim Hunter)” that was recorded in 1976 by Big Tom White and played in Yankee Stadium during professional baseball games. He grew up in the fellowship of Hertford United Methodist Church and was a member of Ducks Unlimited.
Surviving is his daughter, Brandy Hollowell Maraffi (Mark) of Waxhaw; his son, Robert L. “Buddy” Hollowell, III (Stephanie) of Wake Forest; five grandchildren, Robert L. “Rob” IV, Claire, and John Hollowell, and Sam and Hollowell “Wells” Maraffi; and his longtime companion, Dianne Owens.
Friends may visit with the family Monday, April 14, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford. The family will hold a private graveside service in Holy Trinity Episcopal Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hertford United Methodist Church, 200 Dobbs Street, Hertford, NC 27944.
