Richard Lanier Winslow, 72, of 785 Beech Springs Road, Hertford, NC, passed away April 27, 2026, at ECU Health Chowan Hospital.
Born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, Richard was the son of the late John Lawrence Winslow and Elizabeth Marie Gay Winslow. Richard began his career as a welder at Newport News Shipyard, yet his passion always called him back to the fields and water where he enjoyed farming and commercial fishing—work he loved and took great pride in.
Richard was a former member of the Belvidere-Chappell Hill Volunteer Fire Department and the Swampy Bottom Bear Hunters Club. He will be remembered as a hardworking man who valued and found enjoyment when spending time with family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Linda W. Asbell; his brother, Joseph Lawrence Winslow; and a grandson, Thomas Story.
He is survived by his devoted wife, LaRue Chappell Winslow; his sons, Marty Winslow (Holly) and Daniel Winslow, all of Hertford; his daughters, Rebecca Story (Paul) of Hertford and Hannah Saunders (Nathan) of South Prince George, VA; a sister, Joy W. Pritchard (David) of Elizabeth City and his brother-in-law, Charles Asbell of Greenville.
Also surviving are his cherished grandchildren: Alyssa, Chris, and Kaiden Winslow; Lizzy and Andrew Story; and Willow, BelleReve, and Primrose Saunders.
A funeral service will be held Sunday, May 3, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, NC. A visitation will follow the service in the lobby of the funeral home.
Burial will take place at the home of Paul and Rebecca Story on Beech Springs Road in Hertford, where he will be laid to rest beside his beloved grandson, Thomas.
