Michael (Mike) John Retz, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 7th, 2026, at the age of 71. Born on Chanute Air Force Base, on Friday, March 11th, 1955, Michael resided in South Mills, North Carolina, where he created memories with family and friends who will cherish his legacy forever.
Mike proudly served over a decade in the United States Navy, where he gained discipline, valuable skills, and lifelong friendships. His career as an Nuclear Engineer showcased his commitment to innovation and problem-solving, traits that earned him deep respect from colleagues and peers.
A craftsman at heart, Michael had a passion for woodworking and the outdoors. He delighted in building his own log cabin, a testament to his dedication and love for construction, and found peace in collecting coins. His love for family was unparalleled; his most treasured moments were those spent with his four grandchildren, Kelsey, Nathaniel, Melinda, Braelynn and Serenity. The sound of his laughter and joy will be lovingly remembered at family gatherings, particularly during his favorite holidays, the 4th of July and Thanksgiving.
Mike is survived by his cherished children, Mary (Scott) Retz-Penny, Stacey (Erica) Chesser, and John (Rebecca) Retz, along with his grandchildren, who were his pride and joy. He was always there for his family and friends, who now hold fond memories of shared stories and laughter.
Preceded in death by his parents, John Eugene and Mary Helen Retz, and his beloved spouse, Christine Retz, Michael's reunion with them in the hereafter brings comfort to those who loved him deeply on Earth.
