McKay Washington Riddick

   McKay Washington Riddick, 91, of 1357 Belvidere Road, Belvidere, NC, died Thursday, June 22, 2023 in his home where he was cared for by his family.

   Mr. Riddick was born in Gates County on June 5, 1932 and was the last surviving of 11 children born to the late Oscar and Fonnie Mae Stallings Riddick. His sisters were Ruby Lee Riddick, Lillie Mae Deans and Mary Jane Gellner, and his brothers were toddler Oscar Edward, Thurman, Carroll, Paige, Loyd “Pete”, Leonard and Frank Riddick.

   Retired from the Aircraft Repair Supply Center at Air Station Elizabeth City of the US Coast Guard, in earlier years he had worked as a farmer, as a truck driver with Gwaltney, and with Union Camp Corporation in Franklin, VA. He was a member of Piney Woods Friends Meeting and had been a longtime member of the Bear Swamp Hunt Club.

   An Army veteran of the Korean War, he fought in the battle of Pork Chop Hill and was awarded two Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star, the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Company A 17th Infantryman Badge.

   Surviving is his wife of 55 years, Judith Winslow Riddick; their children, Darlene Winslow (husband, Michael), Sharon Lane (husband, Bobby), and Jason Riddick (wife, Joni), all of Hertford; six grandchildren, Kathryn Winslow Stafford (husband, Brad), Michael Kyle Winslow (wife, Brooke), Ashley Lane Smith (husband, David), Robert Keith Lane, Jr., Holly Lynn Riddick, and Lillian McKay Riddick; and six great-grandchildren, Oliver and Rylee Winslow, Ethan Stafford, and Bailey, Caris, and Tate Smith; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

   Funeral services will be held Sunday at 4:00 p.m. in Piney Woods Friends Meeting and will be conducted by Pastor Frank Carter. The burial with military honors will follow in the Meeting’s Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family in the fellowship hall immediately following the service or all other times at the residence.
