Maryland Skittlethorpe, 94, of 315 Mexico Road, entered into the Joy of his Lord on Thursday, October 16, 2025, from his home where he was cared for and surrounded by family.
Mr. Skittlethorpe was born in Washington County on March 19, 1931, and was the son of the late Joseph Edward Skittlethorpe and Cora Leary Skittlethorpe. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of over 62 years, Lillian Russell Skittlethorpe; two grandsons; three sisters; and five brothers.
Maryland was a faithful member of Edenton First Assembly where he helped build the church, was the grounds keeper and helped his wife clean the church for over 50 years. He was the owner operator of Skittlethorpe Brothers Carpentry for over 40 years. Once his brother, Bill passed away he continued doing carpentry work for another 20 years. He enjoyed gardening and mowing his grass. Maryland was a simple man who provided and loved his family dearly. He will truly be missed by all that knew him.
Survivors include his four daughters, Jackie Pierce and husband, Adal of Windsor, NC, Patti Tynch and husband, Stan, Jr. of Edenton, Linda Ricks and husband, Jimmie of Boykins, VA, and Nancy Jess of Edenton; two sons, Doug Grant and wife, Karla of Kingsland, TX, and Steve Grant and wife, Kay of San Antonio, TX; twenty-three grandchildren, forty-three great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 19, 2025, at Edenton First Assembly by Pastor Andrew Knott and Pastor Randy Pierce. The burial will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. prior to the service in the church.
