Mary Inez Roberts

Mary Inez Boyce Roberts, beloved wife and mother, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 5th, 2026 in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Born on June 15th, 1947, she was a lifelong resident of Perquimans County and was the daughter of the late Maryland Cree Boyce, Sr. and Sudie Hurdle Boyce.

Inez was preceded in death by her parents, as well as her four brothers, Maryland Cree Boyce, Jr., Walter Eugene Boyce, Jesse Hurdle Boyce, and Francis Carlton Boyce.

Inez was a devoted wife to her loving husband, Benjamin Griggs Roberts, Sr. for almost 57 years, and together they built a beautiful family and enjoyed their various travels. She is survived by her husband, their cherished children Benjamin Griggs Roberts, Jr. (Barbara) of Elizabeth City, NC, and Susan Ellen Roberts of North Topsail Beach, NC, two granddogs, Maxxwell and Minerva, as well as many adored nieces and nephews.

Upon graduating from Perquimans County High School in 1965, Inez attended Carolina School of Commerce in Elizabeth City before working at Jones & Temple for 11 years. Later, she worked as a Teacher’s Assistant in the Perquimans County Schools, working mostly with 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades for 16 years until her retirement in 2007.

Inez was an active member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Hertford for 69 years, and was also a member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 126.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to your favorite charity. The family will host a visitation on Thursday, October 8th, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home in Hertford. The funeral service will be held the following day, Friday, October 9th, 2026 at 1:00 PM at the same location, offering family and friends a chance to celebrate her life.
