Mary Parker McLendon

   Mary Ellen Parker McLendon, 91, of Elizabeth City, NC, passed away Wednesday, February 21, 2024 in her home where she was being cared for by family.

   Mrs. McLendon was born in Pasquotank County on March 3, 1932, and was the daughter of the late Caleb Bernard and Mattie Elliott Pritchard Parker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joel Franklin McLendon, Sr., her daughter, Elaine Nixon Hill, her son, Joel Franklin “Joey” McLendon, II, and by brothers, Dallas, Henry, and Bernard Parker.

   At a young age her family moved to Manteo where she lived until she returned to Elizabeth City in 1965. She was a realtor for many years, and was proud to also be a wife, mother, and grandmother. A member of Freedom Baptist Ministries, she had formerly enjoyed membership in Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church. Active in the community in which she lived, she volunteered with Sentara Albemarle Medical Center for many years and was active with the Albemarle Arts Council.

   Surviving is her two granddaughters, Nicole Smith and Stephanie Hill, both of Elizabeth City; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and other extended family members and friends.

   A memorial service will be held Sunday, March 3, at 3:00 p.m. in Freedom Baptist Ministries, 2290 Peartree Road, Elizabeth City.
