With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Louis George Wilkins, Jr., affectionately known as George, who left us on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at the age of 78. He was born on March 17, 1947, in Edenton, N.C., the very first baby born in Chowan Hospital.
George obtained his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his master’s degree from the University of Virginia. He began his career teaching mathematics, and a few years later changed careers. He dedicated many years of his professional life to IBM as a computer programmer. He was a man of diverse interests, with a profound love for collecting records and antique toys, and a passion for science fiction and movies.
His household was always filled with warmth and love, shared with his wife of 46 years, Gloria, and their beloved daughter, Maya. A devoted animal lover, George found joy in the companionship of his cherished pets. George took immense pride in being a dedicated husband, father, and “animal dad.”
He is preceded in death by his parents, Louis George Wilkins, Sr. and Frances Privott Wilkins, whose memories he carried with him throughout his life.
George leaves behind a loving family to cherish his memory: his wife, Gloria Wilkins; their daughter, Maya Wilkins; his sister, Debbie Swicegood and her husband Jay; nephews, Jason Swicegood (Maude), Matthew Swicegood (Darcie), and Brian Swicegood (Elizabeth).
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at the Chapel of Mowell Funeral Home, Peachtree City, Georgia. The burial service will be held at the Chapel of Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home in Edenton, NC at a later date.
In lieu of flowers the family lovingly asks that donations be made in George’s name to Holt International at holtinternational.org
