Lon Andrews Humphreys

Today we remember Lon Andrews Humphreys, of Hertford, NC, who at 91 years old, died on Friday, August 22, 2025.

Lon was first and foremost a Christian. He loved Jesus Christ and committed his long life to serving Him. Lon is survived by his bride of 68 years, Marcia and his sons Greg (Brenda) and Mark (Sally) and was predeceased by his eldest son Andy (1995).

Lon was a country boy who came from the hills of Sutton, West VA and born to Mary and Levi Humphreys on April 27, 1934. His life included growing up with and learning from nine siblings. The Navy drafted Lon during the Suez Canal conflict in 1956-57. In 1957 he married Marcia even though his family declared he was ‘robbing the cradle’! Lon was the father of three very musically inclined sons. Life was full with recitals and ball games, often with the band included.

From 1970-1989 the Humphreys family opened a pre-school in the local Methodist Church in Hampton, VA. Lon built most of the equipment from catalogue pictures for four classrooms. Lon was involved in every aspect of organizing “Children’s World”.

Lon had been trained in business machines and started his own business in Lynchburg. He became a government contractor at Fort Eustis, VA and Langley Field before retiring in 1989. Lon built a home from the ground up with his own hands in Snug Harbor (in Hertford, NC) and he and Marcia moved there full time. It was in his retirement years that Lon developed a love of working with wood. As a result of living on a river, Lon enjoyed crafting small boats; so much so that he became known as “The Boatman” to friends. Lon also found ways to serve others using his beloved tractor and this activity filled most of his days, much to the delight and gratitude of neighbors and friends!

Lon assumed the role as a Deacon of Snug Harbor Community Church and also sang in the church choir. In 1993, Lon had an opportunity to extend his building skills in other countries with Word of Life Fellowship. The goal of this Ministry is to provide camps with Christian values for the next generation. Lon and Marcia spent several years traveling to help fulfil this mission.

No matter how far and wide Lon traveled though, he never lost his love for West Virginia. You could see it in his paintings and hear it in his voice as he spoke so fondly of his beloved home.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Snug Harbor Community Church, 133 Fir Street, Hertford, NC. Lon was not only a Deacon and Board Member of the church, but he helped lay the actual foundation for the building. He loved this church and would want it to continue.

The family would like to extend grateful thanks to the many friends, family members and other care givers, including the hospice nurses and the ARU team at ECU Hospital in Greenville, NC. A memorial service to remember Lon will be held at Snug Harbor Community Church, 133 Fir Street, Hertford, NC, on Sunday, September 7, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary, with refreshments and fellowship with the family to immediately follow.
