John Augustus Smith

   John Augustus Smith, Sr., 73, of 586 Burnt Mill Road, Hertford, NC, died Thursday, September 28, 2023 in his home.

   Mr. Smith was born in Chowan County on September 12, 1950 and was the son of the late Robert Wilson and Mary Lois Todd Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, John A. “Big Boy” Smith, Jr.; sisters, Gloria Jean Roth and Carolyn Burgess, and by brothers, Elbridge and Robert Smith.

   A retired residential painter, he worked for many years with Albemarle Painting Contractors, and later with his wife in the family business, L & J Painting.

   Surviving is his wife of 43 years, Linda Lee Paramore Smith; his daughter, Kimberly Diane Smith of Bear Grass; and two sisters, Ruth Groff of Hubert and Mary Watson of Chocowinity. Also surviving are Linda’s children, Amy Diane Eason Ward (husband, Earl) of Belvidere and Brad Eason of Colington. Together John and Linda shared eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

   A gathering for family and friends will be held Sunday from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton. At the beginning of the gathering words of remembrance will be offered by his brother-in-law, The Rev. William A. Paramore, Jr. Following those words of comfort the family will remain and receive friends. A private burial will be in Beaver Hill Cemetery.
