Joe Allen Harrell, 76, of 104 Kenyon Drive, Hertford, passed away Friday, May 1, 2026 in Elizabeth City. Mr. Harrell was born in Perquimans County on September 19, 1949, and was the son of the late James Wesley Harrell, Sr. and Violet Nokomis Harrell.
Joe worked as a grainery manager for Parkway Ag for over thirty years. In addition to his work, he was a well-traveled auctioneer, and operated Country Corner Antiques in Hertford for many years. He loved fishing, vegetable gardening, and collecting antique tractors. A couple of his favorite vices were homemade ice cream from a hit-and-miss motor, and pickled herring, (but never together!)
Surviving is his wife of forty-nine and a half years, Joan Cohoon Harrell; a daughter, Cristin Harrell Winslow and her husband, Justin of Greenville; a son, Joshua Britton Harrell and his wife, Randi of Elizabeth City; two sisters, June Harrell Piland and her husband, John of Clayton, and Jill Harrell Kahl and her husband, Paul of Hertford; two brothers, Jesse Vance Harrell and his wife, Hilda and Jimmy Harrell and his wife, Darlene, all of Hertford; a sister-in-law, Carroll Harrell of Hertford; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Pat Harrell.
Joe’s life was full of love, laughter, and so many wonderful moments his family will cherish forever. While they will always long for him here, they trust that he is fully healed and celebrating in Heaven. He will always be deeply loved and remembered.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, May 4th at 2:00 pm in Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, with Pastor Dario Ruvarac officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation at www.pulmonaryfibrosis.org. Please share a memory with the family via the Online Guestbook.
