Jimmy Brown Turner

Belvidere, NC---

Jimmy Brown Turner, 79, of Belvidere, NC, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 8, 2024, in Elizabeth City Health and Rehabilitation.

Mr. Turner was born in Perquimans County on August 8, 1945, and was the son of the late Rudy Lee Turner and Lillie Mae Smith Turner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Cheryl Joyce Turner, a sister, Yvonne McCotter, brothers, Gaston and Ted Turner (Kathy, deceased); and by brothers-in-law, Ambrose Layden and Blackwell Powell.

A retired truck driver from Reed Oil Company following 37 years of employment, he later worked with PCG Solid Waste & Recycling at their Belvidere site. He was a member of Belvidere-Ryland Church of Christ where he had served as a deacon for many years. Mr. Turner enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, especially bird watching and gardening, and loved to share his fresh vegetables with friends and neighbors. However, his greatest joy came from being “Paw” to his grandchildren.

Surviving is his wife of 58 years, Norma Dean Cartwright Turner; his daughter, Shelia Turner Russell (Steven) of Belvidere; two sisters, Hazel Layden of Belvidere and Annette Powell of Gatesville; a brother, Roger Turner (Beulah) of Belvidere; three grandchildren, Alden Matthew Russell (Amberly), Madisyn Lillie Russell, and Caroline Elizabeth Russell, all of Belvidere; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Friends may join the family for a time of visitation on Sunday from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. in Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford. A private burial will follow in the family cemetery near the home.
