Janice Perry Winslow

On Monday, December 15th, Janice Perry Winslow passed from this life to the next in the company of her two surviving children: Cindy Winslow Bunch, Dean Clark Winslow, and Holly Winslow, her oldest granddaughter, child of Billy Toneil Wnslow, her deceased son.

She and her loving husband of 73 years, Billy Lee Winslow, whose passing preceded hers, were blessed with a large family of children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and in-laws whom they dearly loved.

Janice was raised in New Hope, Perquimans County, quite a distance from Billy’s home of Whiteston, but after meeting in high school, their attraction grew into a long, happy, and productive marriage. As a couple, they began life in the small, country community of Whiteston. Billy drove a transport oil truck and Janice created and managed the needs of 3 children, gardened, sewed clothes, cooked meals, and participated in the spiritual life of the Quaker community. Theirs was a loving home surrounded by farmland and sustained through their work and their love for each other.

Later, the family moved to Herford, primarily to meet the needs of teenaged children, and began a new life that ultimately focused on their growing family and on service to their community. Janice went to work as an attendance counselor for the Perquimans County School System where her devotion to her job, and the students and families with whom she worked, led to a long and storied career. It was commonplace for her to go to the grocery store and be approached by a grown teenager who began a conversation with, “Miss Winslow, I remember when…and I thank you for caring about me back in those days.” Her face would light up, and her heart would be touched by the realization that she had positively impacted others in the community; that her work mattered.

Janice cared about people. She cared without judgment, she gave without hesitation, and she loved generously the large family that she and Billy had created as well as the people of her community with whom she had personal relationships. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and public servant, loved by many who crossed her path in the 93 years of her wonderful life.

According to their wishes, Billy and Janice will be remembered at a private interment for the family sometime in the spring. The family would like to thank everyone for the love you showed Billy and Janice, and for your condolences upon Janice’s passing.
