Hilda Mae Sawyer Mills

Mrs. Hilda Mae Sawyer Mills, 98, of South Mills, NC passed away peacefully at her residence on Friday, June 13, 2025.

A native of Camden County, NC, Hilda was the wife of the late Charlie Phelps Johnson and the late C. Gerald Mills and the daughter of Jake Sawyer and Claudie Curles Sawyer, both deceased.

Survivors include her grandsons, Michael Alton Johnson and wife, Lendy Yeaman Johnson and her brother, Phillip Yeaman, and George Eugene Johnson and wife, Bridget Cartwright Johnson; great grandchildren, Liam Michael Johnson, Kristen Whitehurst Caputo and husband, Matt Caputo, and Juliane Brooke Johnson and fiance, Andrew “Freya” Robbins; stepson, Jimmy Mills;

In addition to her two husbands and parents, Hilda was preceded in death by her two sons, Charlie Alton Johnson and wife, Gloria Umphlett Johnson, and Eugene Phelps Johnson and wife, Margaret Ferriera Johnson; and eight siblings, Elizabeth Smithson, Mildred Casper, Zed “Buddy” Sawyer, Jack Sawyer, Evelyn Twiford, Georgie Game, Bessie Starboard, and Marietta Casper.

A time of celebrating Hilda’s life will be held at a later date.
