Hazel Spivey Bass, 104, passed away on Tuesday, November 12, 2024.
Mrs. Bass was born in Gates County on November 24, 1919, and was the daughter of the late William Thomas and Ella Mae Earley Spivey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Richard Bass; her daughter, Rosenell Umphlett; sisters, Ruth Umphlett, Elizabeth Wiggins, and Lillian Parker; a half-brother, Herbert Spivey; a son-in-law, L.E. Smith; and by a grandson, Lee Umphlett.
A homemaker, Mrs. Bass was a member of Warwick Baptist Church and its Adult Women’s Sunday School Class.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Ella Smith of Elizabeth City and Helen Marie Paul (husband, Tim) of Powell’s Point; a son, Jesse R. Bass (wife, Marlene) of Hobbsville; a half-sister, Gloria Twine, and a half-brother, Thomas Spivey, both of Hobbsville; 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 23 great-great-grandchildren.
In accordance with her wishes, a private graveside service will be held. The family asks that flowers be omitted and contributions in her memory be made to Warwick Baptist Church, in care of Cindy Harrell, 433 Gliden Road, Hobbsville, NC 27946.
