Fenton Cartwright, Sr., 88, formerly of 802 W. Grubb Street, Hertford, NC, passed away peacefully at his most recent residence, Waterbrooke of Elizabeth City..
Born on January 5, 1938, in the New Hope community of Perquimans County, he was the son of the late Dockey Cartwright and Fannie Dail Cartwright Stallings.
Mr. Cartwright dedicated more than 50 years of his life as a service technician specializing in John Deere farm equipment. Throughout his career, he faithfully served with J.C. Blanchard Equipment in Hertford, Hobbs Implement in Edenton and Lee Tractor in Ahoskie until his retirement. He often said he felt blessed to spend his life working on John Deere tractors, and anyone who knew him knew his fondness for the color green. His knowledge, strong work ethic, and willingness to help farmers kept countless pieces of equipment running and earned him the respect and friendship of generations of customers and coworkers.
A member of Whiteville Grove Baptist Church, he most recently attended Mt. Sinai Baptist Church. Throughout his life, ”Big Fent” as he was affectionately known, was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, neighbor and friend to many.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Jackie Midgette Cartwright; his wives, Janet Dail Cartwright and Mardie H. Cartwright; a daughter, Cindy C. Bindo; a son-in-law, Ray Stallings; his sisters, Betty Lou Boyce, Evelyn Overton, Annie Belle Squires, Katie Cartwright, Myrtle Askew, Marguerite Grey, and Fannie Dail Colson; and his brothers, Horace Cartwright, Oliver Cartwright, and Wayland Cartwright.
He is survived by his son, Fenton Cartwright, Jr. and wife, Kim, of Hertford, NC; his daughters, Theresa Stallings of Hertford, NC and Arlene Layden and husband, Elton, of Farmville, VA; his stepdaughter, Dail Bunting and husband, Chris, of Youngsville, NC; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Also surviving is his special companion, Marjorie Winslow, and her children, Steve and wife, Doreen, of Belvidere, NC and Cindy Upton, and husband, Ricky, of Elizabeth City, NC, all of whom held a special place in his heart.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 23, 2026 at the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home Chapel, Hertford, NC with the Rev. Howard Sutton officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the funeral home lobby and all other times at the home of Fenton and Kim Cartwright, 103 Howells Lane, Hertford, NC
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, 389 Swamp Road, Hertford, NC 27944.
