Obituary

Mrs. Faye Umphlett Hoffler, 89, of Sunbury, NC passed away peacefully at her residence surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, October 3, 2026.

Born on May 22, 1937, Faye was David Hoffler’s wife for 68 years and the daughter of Mills Edward Umphlett and Lucy Eure Umphlett, both deceased. She was a longtime member of Beulah Baptist Church, Sunbury, NC.

Survivors include her husband, David Hoffler; three sons, Keith Hoffler (Vanessa), Kurt Hoffler (Heather), and Kris Hoffler; daughter, Jeannie McGregor (Bruce); seven grandchildren, Reid Hoffler (Megan), Nicole Ward (Thomas), Taylor Hoffler, Henry Hoffler, Megan McGregor, Madison Meyers (Keith), and Nicola William (Elijah); four great grandchildren, Berkley Ward, Hayes Ward, Leah Hoffler, and Naomi William; sister, Marion Spivey; brother, M.Q. Umphlett; sister-in-law, Miriam Spence; brothers-in-law, Wyck Hoffler and Harold Hoffler; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Faye was preceded in death by five sisters, Alta Gray, Cordis Dudley, Lois Lawrence; Norene Taylor, and Ruby Rountree; and five brothers, James Umphlett, Leon Umphlett, Milton Umphlett, Ralph Umphlett, and Randolph Umphlett.

Faye was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. She took care of her family and friends with her whole being: love, prayers, energy and always with something good to eat. Faye had a servant heart. She was always looking for things she could do to help others. People were always welcomed into her home with a warm smile, comforting words, and an offer of something good to eat. She prepared numerous dishes for church socials, family get-togethers, and friends and neighbors in time of need. “Miss Faye” was beloved by many children and because of the love she showed them, it was reciprocated by many into adult life. Friends of family she only met a few times commented on how caring and interested she was in their lives and how the southern lady she was had a positive impact on their lives.

After High School she moved to Suffolk, VA where she worked for American Bank. While there she played women’s basketball for a city league and had a lifelong love for the sport. She married David Hoffler in 1958 and went to Germany with him for a year while he was in the military. Their first son was born there. Upon return she lived the remainder of her life as a farmer’s wife in Sunbury, NC, an active member of Beulah Baptist Church and the community.

Funeral services celebrating Fayes’ life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 8, 2026 at Beulah Baptist Church, Sunbury, NC with Pastor Greg Jernigan officiating. Interment will be private at Cross Cemetery, Sunbury, NC. The family will receive friends with a reception in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Beulah Baptist Church, Sunbury, NC 27979.

The family thanks caretakers Caroline and Sheryl that provided caring support in her last few years. Albemarle Home Care and Hospice also provided needed and effective comfort in the last few months. Meals provided by numerous family and friends as well as Meals on Wheels in the last few years are also greatly appreciated.
