Evelyn Long Layden

   Evelyn Long Layden, 99, of 727 W. Grubb Street, Hertford, NC, passed away Thursday, February 9, 2023 in her home where she was being cared for by family.

   Mrs. Layden was born in Perquimans County on May 13, 1923, and was the daughter of the late William Preston Long and Mary Chappell Long. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elliott Layden, Jr. and by her brother, Julian Long.

   Along with her husband, she co-owned and operated Layden's TV & Radio Repair Service for many years. A member of Bethel Baptist Church, she attended and enjoyed fellowship in Anderson United Methodist Church where she had taught Sunday school for over 30 years.

   Surviving are her two sons, Billy Layden (wife, Norma) and Wayne Layden (wife, Gail); her granddaughter, Lindsey Layden Campbell (husband, Ronnie), all of Hertford; and other extended family members.

   Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Chapel, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, and will be conducted by the Rev. Garry Mickey. A private burial will be in Cedarwood Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family in the funeral home immediately following the service on Sunday, and all other times at the residence.

   The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to her caregivers, Lisa, Dawn, Sheila, Deanna, Hazelene, and Joyce, and to the staff of Amedisys Hospice for all the care provided to Mrs. Layden and family during their time of need.
