Ellen Powell Carroll

   Ellen Powell Carroll, 97, formerly of Norfolk, Virginia, and since 2014 a resident of Anniston, Alabama, died Tuesday, February 21, 2023.

   Mrs. Carroll was born in Gates County, North Carolina, on January 6, 1926, and was the daughter of the late William Henry and Avie Lowe Powell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick John Carroll; by a sister, Ollie Brown; and by brothers, George McCoy, William Roland, James Randolph, Lonnie Henry, Sam, and Thomas Madison Powell.

   Formerly employed as a nurse’s aide at Beth Shalom Nursing Home in Virginia Beach, VA, Mrs. Carroll was a lifelong member of Cool Spring Baptist Church in Eure, NC.

   Surviving are four daughters, Theresa Williams of Gates, Margaret Adams of Anniston, Jennie Proctor Lexington, KY, and Joan Keech of Norfolk; a son, Patrick “Joe” Carroll of Ahoskie; a sister, Nell Long of Eure; two brothers, Frank Powell and Mack Powell, both of Eure; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren with two more arriving this year, and one great-great-grandchild.

   A graveside service will be held Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in Cool Spring Baptist Church Cemetery and will be conducted by The Reverend Tracy Gregory. Friends are invited to visit with the family in the church social hall immediately following the service.

   In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Cool Spring Baptist Church, in care of Donna Doughtie, 363 Taylor Mill Road, or to the Eure Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 51, both in Eure, NC 27935.
