Edward Lee Hawkins

   Edward Lee “Ed” Hawkins, 75, of Edenton, NC, passed away Saturday, April 13, 2024 in his home following a courageous battle with cancer.

   Mr. Hawkins was born in Clarksburg, WV on January 10, 1949 and was the son of the late James Edward Hawkins and Phyllis Maxine Morris Hawkins Barnes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Dana Hawkins.

   A veteran, he proudly served in the Navy from May of 1968 to November of 1978. During his military service he made three six-month deployments on the air craft carrier, USS Independence, having attained the rank of Petty Officer First Class as an Aviation Electronics Technician. After completing advance training in A, B, and C schools of instruction where he graduated top of his class, he became an instructor on how to operate one of the first computers used in the Navy, the 106-B computer. Following his military service he enjoyed a lucrative commercial fishing business from 1979 to 1984 and then was employed with civil service from 1984 to 2014 having retired at age 65. Other enjoyments included fishing and hunting with his sons and working in his yard. A believer in Jesus Christ, he gave his heart to the Lord and was baptized in April of 1972. He attended and enjoyed fellowship in Cape Colony Church of Christ.

   Surviving is his wife of 55 years, Beverly Roberts Hawkins; two sons, Nicholas “Nick” Hawkins (wife, Toni) of Kill Devil Hills and Richard “Richie” Hawkins (wife, Vicky) of Vienna WV; a sister, Karen Baus of Vermont; a brother, Phillip Barnes of Connecticut; six grandchildren, Lailah, Shailah, Heidi, Katie (husband, Ricky), Jessica (husband, Darryl), and Allen; five great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

   A memorial service is being planned for a later date in West Virginia.
