Alvah Price Monds, MD, of 1010 Deal Trail, Lake Prince Woods, Suffolk, VA, passed away on July 18, 2026 in his home surrounded by family.
Dr. Monds was born in Greensboro, NC on September 30, 1946. He and his brother, John Perry Monds, were the first set of twins adopted from the North Carolina Children’s Home. Their adoptive parents, Riley Sidney Monds, Jr. and Frances Fowler Monds, longtime residents of Hertford, preceded him in death.
Dr. Monds received his Bachelor's Degree in 1969 and worked as a Certified Public Accountant with Ernst & Ernst in Winston-Salem for three years. He then continued his education, earning his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1978. As a physician, he served in the Emergency Medical Departments of various hospitals in Oklahoma City, Rocky Mount, Roanoke Rapids, and Elizabeth City, NC. Lastly, he was the co-owner of First Choice Urgent Care, also in Elizabeth City.
In 2011 he married Betty Faye Ralph Rountree, a nurse and a resident of the Hobbsville community of Gates County, and with the marriage welcomed three stepchildren, Frankie Carr (husband, Randy), Terri L. Riddick (husband, J.B.), and Lester Ralph “Les” Rountree (wife, Mandy). Betty passed away May 16, 2021.
In addition to his brother and stepchildren, Dr. Monds is survived by five step-grandchildren, Brooklyne Garrett (husband, Blake), Gage Riddick (wife, Anne-Logan), Hayden Riddick, Blake Rountree, and Cole Rountree; one great-grandchild, Nixon Garrett; other members of the Ralph and Rountree families, many church friends from Hobbsville and Hertford Baptist Churches, and his Lake Prince Woods family.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Hobbsville Baptist Church, 405 Hobbsville Road, Hobbsville, NC, and will be conducted by the Rev. Dario Ruvarac. Burial will follow in the Hobbsville Baptist Church Cemetery. An additional graveside service will be held at 4:00 p.m. at Cedarwood Cemetery, Jimmy Hunter Drive, Hertford, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the NC Children's Home Society, P.O. Box 14608, Greensboro, NC 27415 NC Children's Home Society Page, or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 Saint Jude Page.
