Dorothy Heninger “Dot” Habit, passed away on Saturday, August 2, 2025, in ECU Health Medical Center, Greenville.
Mrs. Habit was born in Edenton on November 5, 1933, and was the daughter of the late Molly Heninger Hollowell and William W. Heninger. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, John Francis “Jack” Habit, Jr.; her sister, Gladys H. Talley; and by her brother, Leroy Heninger.
Dot was a lifelong member of Saint Ann Catholic Church and at the time of her death was the oldest member attending. She served in the church women’s group and was a member of the choir. A graduate of Edenton High School where she was a majorette in the school band, her community involvement included serving as a Girl Scout leader and a member of the Edenton Jaycettes. Many will remember her smile and cheerful demeanor in the local State Farm Insurance office where she worked with her husband until they retired.
Dot is survived by her three children, Julie Habit Spivey and husband Larry of Edenton, Jackie Marie Habit of Columbia, SC, and John Christopher Habit and wife Renee of Red Oak; and six grandchildren, Beau Spivey and wife Courtney, Kelly Gibson and husband Derek, Matthew Habit and wife Nicole, Josh Spivey and wife Melissa, Adam Perez and fiancé Brandi Lambert, and Kaila Johnson and husband Spencer. She also leaves to cherish her memory 12 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
A funeral mass will be held Wednesday, August 6th, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Ann Catholic Church. Immediately following the service friends are invited to visit with the family in the church parish hall. A private burial will be later that afternoon in Beaver Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Ann Catholic Church, 207 N. Broad Street, Edenton, NC 27932, or to the Tri-County Animal Shelter, 138 Icaria Road, Tyner, NC 27980.
