Donna Lee Lassiter Berry, playfully dubbed Donna Mae, was born May 31, 1963. Her father, William George Lassiter, worked at Planter’s Peanuts until he retired. Her mother Rosa Lee Lassiter was employed as a nurse. Donna was a skilled painter and found calmness in her work.
Donna was a whirlwind of energy and spunk that lived life to the fullest as if each day could be her last. She loved deeply and passionately; she was never scared of loving someone or helping them in a time of need. Donna taught her daughters how to do the same.
She was the eternal summer wild child at heart. Donna loved it when the weather was warm and the beaches were packed. She grew up along the Chowan River, where she spent her childhood swimming and fishing, and she continued the tradition with her girls. In the years that passed she would carry a few poles with her and her brother would tease her about not being able to catch anything with one pole much less three.
Donna truly embraced the essence of summer. She spent several hours making sure her flower beds were perfect; the bird feeders and baths were filled. In the afternoon she spent working on her pool and in her garden. If the weather was hot, she was doing her thing as she often put it.
Donna was preceded in death by her father William George Lassiter and Rosa Lassiter. She leaves behind her daughters Tashanna Marx and her husband David Marx, and Tabitha Martin and her husband Jared Martin. They currently reside in Hertford. She also leaves behind two brothers, William Lassiter Jr. and his wife Lori Lassiter from Tyner as well as Alfred Lassiter of Edenton. She leaves behind 5 grandchildren, Ezra Martin, Sadie Martin, Michael Marx, Jacob Marx and Pamela Marx. She also was graced with one great grandchild. Her survivors also include a niece and two nephews. She will be missed by the many lives she touched along the way.
Her daughters are honoring their mother’s legacy of helping others by doing the same during this time. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to your local food bank or Shatterproof.
Her funeral service will be held when the weather starts to warm in true Donna fashion. The family will keep everyone posted.
