Darothy McCurry, born October 21, 1950, passed away peacefully at home on October 13, 2026, surrounded by family.
A native of Great Bridge, Virginia, Darothy later made her home in Cove City and then Gates County, North Carolina. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend who loved her family, shopping, country music, and most of all, Jesus.
Family was the center of Darothy’s life. She especially enjoyed hosting family reunions and bringing everyone together. One of her greatest joys was being a grandmother to Cayland and Zoey, whom she loved dearly. They held a special place in her heart, and the love she had for them was one of the greatest blessings in her life.
A special tribute goes to her nephew, Henry Collins, and his wife, Darlene Collins, who lovingly cared for Darothy around the clock during the last several years of her life. Their dedication, sacrifice, and unwavering love ensured she was cared for at home. Their devotion was a beautiful reflection of the same caring spirit Darothy had shown others throughout her own life. Their presence beside her in her final moments was a testament to the special bond they shared.
Darothy was preceded in death by her parents, Ruby Smith and George Franklin Smith, and her brothers, Charles Smith and George Smith Jr.
She leaves behind her only child, Charles Hartman Jr. (Kim); her cherished grandchildren, Cayland and Zoey Hartman; her sister, Ella Glover (Jerry); her brothers, Raymond Smith (Darlene) and Eddie Smith (Melanie); and many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Darothy will be remembered for her sense of humor, her deep love of family, her faith in Jesus, and the kindness she showed to others. She never let an opportunity pass to tell her loved ones she loved them, even just hours before her passing this still remained true. Though her absence will leave a void in the hearts of those who loved her, her memory will live through the family she cherished, the lives she touched, and the many memories they will continue to share.
May she rest peacefully in the loving arms of Jesus, reunited with those who went before her.
The family will greet friends with a time of visitation from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 15, 2026 at the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home, Gatesville, NC.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 16, 2026 at the Holland Municipal Cemetery, 6668 O’Kelly Road, Suffolk, VA 23437.
