Champion Charles Cox, 86, of Hertford, NC, passed away Tuesday, September 30, 2025, in Edenton House.
Mr. Cox was born in Cape May, NJ on April 2, 1939, and was the son of the late Lilburn and Jane Reeves Cox. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Cynthia V. Cox, who died in August 2020.
A retired electrical engineer who owned and operated Cox Controls in Vineland, NJ for many years, he retired to the Snug Harbor community of Perquimans County, NC in 1996. He was a member of Snug Harbor Community Church and an Amateur extra class radio operator. In 2003, he served as the District Emergency Coordinator for Area 1. Among his many enjoyments included his love of boats and was pleased to have worked on the Periauger Project in 2003 to help preserve North Carolina Maritime Heritage. He also loved working in his shop and was known to repair anything that a neighbor dropped off and for his work at the Perquimans County Senior Center when anything needed fixing.
Surviving are his two daughters, Charlene Cox of Hertford and Christene Pierce (Darryl) of Cary, and five grandchildren, Emily and Matthew Candler, Caleb, Benjamin and Rachel Pierce.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, and will be conducted by the Rev. Don Carter. Friends may visit with the family in the funeral home the hour prior to the services on Saturday. A private burial will be held on Tuesday in Siloam Cemetery, Vineland, NJ.
