Known as Mr. Bernie to friends and family, he was a faithful member of Powellsville Baptist Church being born - again at the age of eleven he went on to serve for many years being ordained as a deacon in 1968. He continued to be active in his church, teaching Sunday School, engaged in worship and teaching children’s church and known as the man that stood outside and waved at people on Sunday morning. Bernie loved his family, his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and everyone that he met. Bernie was a faithful witness sharing the love of God everywhere he went, often disturbing penny crosses to any new faces he came across. Many in the community knew Bernie from his time of employment as the Maola Milk Man. He later worked at Southern States and then retired from Meherrin Chemical. Bernie was the last surviving charter member of the Powellsville Volunteer Fire Dept. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, visiting shut-ins, and singing.
