Obituary

Carl Egerton Jonson died at home on July 31st, three days before his 99th birthday. Born in 1927 in Newark, NJ, Carl and his sister, Cecilia, were raised by his widowed mother. He spent his youth in both Vermont and New York before serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. Following his military service, he attended George Washington University, where he completed his education and launched a distinguished career in accounting.

Along with Rod Murray and Jack White, Carl established an accounting firm in Arlington, VA, (Murray, Jonson and White) where he built a respected professional reputation. His expertise and integrity led to his appointment to the Virginia State Board of Accountancy, where he served under both Republican and Democratic administrations, reflecting the confidence placed in him across political lines.

Carl was a lifelong Episcopalian. He was the treasurer of the various churches he attended, served on vestries, did the readings on Sundays and cooked pancakes for Shrove Tuesday dinners.

In his personal life, Carl married Eleanor in 1952, and together they raised three children. After their divorce, he married Leah in 1984, beginning a new chapter in his life.

After retiring, he and Leah moved to Albemarle Plantation in Hertford, NC. In retirement he volunteered by providing free tax service through VITA and being treasurer of the local Rotary club as well as his church. He also took up wood carving and created some beautiful birds, cute Santas and other figures. One of his biggest joys was sitting on the porch and watching the golfers and the stunning sunsets over the water. Surrounded by friends and the beauty of coastal North Carolina, Carl embraced a well-earned retirement after a lifetime of service to his family, his profession, and his community.

Carl is survived by his three children, Karen (Bill), Christine (Roger) and Craig (Nina); step-children, Janelle and Jon; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2026 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Hertford, NC with The Reverend Whit Stroud officiating. Buril will follow in the church cemetery.

The family wishes to thank the amazing personal care given to Carl by Briana, the long-time home care provided by Kathryn, and the professional work done by the Perquimans County EMTs and Sheriff’s departments.
