Capt. Felix Anthony Giovinazzi

   Capt. Felix Anthony "Capt. Sam" Giovinazzi, US Navy Retired, 82, of Hertford, NC, passed away Monday, January 9, 2023 in Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.

   Mr. Giovinazzi was born in Manhattan, NY on December 20, 1940, and was the son of the late Anthony and Mary Piccinini Giovinazzi. A graduate of Iona College, he retired as a Senior Executive in the computer industry. A veteran of the US Navy, he proudly served our country for over 30 years in combined active and reserve duty. He continued to serve his country driving DAV vans for the Veterans Hospital in La Jolla, CA and served as an Ombudsman for the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) until his passing. A member of St. Anne Catholic Church in Edenton, he enjoyed an active life kayaking, golfing, boating, and bridge at the Albemarle Plantation.

  Capt. Sam had a long and illustrious military career in the US Navy. His active duty ships were the USS Ashtabula-AO51 and USS Compass Island-AG153. Sam’s Reserve Commands included the Reserve Underway Training Unit (RUTU) where he was a Plank Holder, Commanding Officer of Commander Naval Forces Japan, and Captain of the Reserve Crew of the USS Lang-1060.

   Surviving is his wife of 57 years, Lynn Essex Giovinazzi; his daughter, Christina Marie Carter (husband, Kelly) of Erie, CO; his son, Andrew Tracy Giovinazzi (wife, Courtney) of West Bath, ME; and four grandchildren, Enzo, Dominic, Lydia, and Riley.

   A funeral mass will be held Wednesday, January 18, at 10:00 a.m. in St. Anne Catholic Church and will be conducted by Father Jairo A. Maldonado-Pacheco. Friends are invited to join the family for a time of visitation in the Albemarle Plantation Clubhouse immediately following the funeral mass.
