Betty Bromley West White

Betty Bromley West White, 99, of Greensboro, NC, passed away on February 28, 2025.

Betty was born on May 15, 1925, in Louisa, KY to the late Perry A. West and Alice Pinson West and was the youngest of eight children. She was married to William C. White for 54 years until his death in 2011.

Betty spent her childhood in Williamson, WV, and graduated from Williamson High School where she played flute in the band. Before attending Marshall University in Huntington, WV, Betty worked as the librarian for the Williamson Public Library. While at Marshall University, Betty found an interest in the medical field and moved to Akron, OH for training to become a certified medical technologist. She worked in hospitals in Roanoke, VA, Princeton, NJ and Winston-Salem, NC before moving to Greensboro to set up the laboratory for a private medical practice. She worked there until her son was born and then went back to work after her daughter entered third grade and remained there for 20 years. She was a strong, independent career woman before it was fashionable but also enjoyed being a mom and grandmom.

It was on a blind date set up by her roommate that Betty met the love of her life, Bill, and they were wed in November 1956. Together they enjoyed traveling, gardening, reading, playing golf and attending concerts. Betty also enjoyed playing bridge, helping with her son’s Boy Scout troop and her daughter’s Girl Scout troop as well as volunteering at their school events. She was a wonderful cook and loved to try new recipes. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and was happiest when she could share time with her family.

In addition to her parents and husband, Betty was preceded in death by her siblings.

Surviving is her son, William C. White, Jr.; daughter, Jane W. Bason (David); grandchildren, Emily Bason, Perry Bason (Caitlyn), and Garrett Blackmar White (Emma); great-grandson, Colt Bason and great-granddaughter, Noah Bason. She is also survived by dear nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, May 17, at 2:00 p.m. in Beaver Hill Cemetery, Edenton.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made to the Greensboro Public Library or to a charity of one’s choice.

The family also wishes to thank the wonderful caregivers who assisted their mom for the past three years as well as the nurses/staff of AuthoraCare.
