Elizabeth Hill Harrell Little passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, November 27th at home.
“Bess” was born February 5, 1976 to Nelson “Missie” Capehart Harrell and Joseph Scott Harrell, Jr. She is survived by George Roscoe Little IV, her husband of 17 years, and her treasured children, George Roscoe Little V and Julian Scott Little. She was the oldest daughter of Missie and Scotty, big sister to Catherine Capehart Harrell Salyer (Stephen) and Frances Scott Moore Harrell Winslow (Wyatt), an adored aunt to Wade, Marjorie, Abigail, Mary Frances, Drew, and Will Winslow, Cece, Averett, Scottie Salyer, and Katie Gray and Wood Farless, sister-in-law to Katharine (Little) and Wood Farless, and daughter-in-law to Gray Brantley Little. Her grandparents, George and Marjorie Capehart and Scott and Beverly Harrell were there to welcome her in heaven. A big, loving family of aunts, uncles, cousins, and Godchildren will miss her forever.
Bess was a graduate of John A. Holmes High School, attended Salem College, and graduated from Meredith College. She taught Pre-K for 27 years, beginning in Raleigh and Greenville before coming home to Edenton where she taught at White Oak School for the last 20 years.
She was an active, lifelong member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where she currently served on the Vestry. She grew up with a strong network of friends all over Eastern NC from her involvement with the Episcopal Diocese of East Carolina and Camp Trinity, where she worked as a camp counselor. Camp Trinity always held a special place in her heart.
Bess personified agape love, navigating life with a gentle strength and spirit that touched all who’ve ever known her. She had the world’s kindest, most tender heart, an easy-going nature, and loved without limits, bounds or strings. She was a nurturer, caring more about the well-being of others before herself. She made friends with ease throughout life and did an incredible job of keeping in touch with all of them, always. She was determined to keep the golden threads of family and friendship shining in the tapestry of her life, and she was masterful at doing so. She was forever planning the next opportunity to enjoy the company of those she loved. She was incredibly grateful for the gift of her role as a wife and mother, and family was the source of her greatest joy. She was the very best wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend. Loyalty, kindness and unconditional love were her gifts. Her heart held an endless supply of each, and she gave of them with sincere joy and generosity. Bess was happiest by the water on laid back summer days.
The world wasn’t ready to lose Bess. May her life well lived remind us that family and friends are the real treasures of this journey. Be kind and gentle, always loyal- and love without measure until we’re all together again.
A service of celebration for Bess’s life will be held Tuesday, December 3rd, at 2:00 p.m. in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and will be conducted by The Revered Melody Purdue. Friends are invited to join the family for a time of fellowship and sharing in the Parish Hall immediately following the service.
