Obituary

Annie Winnie Bethel, 81, of Ahoskie, NC, was born on April 22, 1944 to the late Ora and Clarence Peterson. Annie, when asked her name, would say Annie Peterson Bethel. She departed this life on Wednesday, April 8, 2026 at ECU Health Chowan Hospital, Edenton, NC at 7:48 a.m.

Annie was educated in the Hertford County School System. In the past, she fellowshipped at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, Winton, NC. Annie worked at Hertford County School System several years as a cafeteria worker until her retirement. She also worked several years at Hot Plate Cafe, Cofield, NC in the cafeteria as head cook. In addition, she worked at the Jenkins House Restaurant, Ahoskie, NC for several years as head cook.

Annie was a dedicated and devoted QVC shopper, whereas UPS drivers knew her first name personally. She was a devoted daughter to her mother Ora Peterson, providing loving care at their home until her passing.

Left to cherish her memories are two children, Michael Bethel and wife, Sheila of Edenton, NC and Brian Miales of Winton, NC; four grandchildren, Tornesha Banks and husband, Earl, Kiemo White, Nolan Toppin, and Olivia Odom; five siblings, Shirley Sheppard of Ahoskie, NC, Henry Peterson of Landover, MD, Joseph Peterson of Landover, MD, William Lee Peterson and wife Patricia of Texas, and Herbert Peterson of Ahoskie, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Annie leaves two special friends, Steve Jenkins and Sarah Eley, who often checked on her, whether at home, in the hospital or nursing home.

In addition to her parents, Annie was preceded in death by her son, Curtis Bethel; twin sisters, Laura and Christine Peterson.

Funeral services celebrating Annie’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 19, 2026 at the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home Chapel, Edenton, NC with Rev. Brenda Peterson officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery, Ahoskie, NC. The family will greet friends from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home on Sunday prior to the service.
