Anne Hollowell Smith, 86, formerly of Chowan County, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2024.
Anne was born in Edenton on July 23, 1937, and was the daughter of the late Ray and Maxine Hollowell of the Crossroads community.
A phenomenal athlete, Anne was the starting center for her school basketball team from the 8th through the 12th grades and was recognized as All-State Center. Averaging 40 points a game, she once scored 72 of her team’s 76 points in a 32-minute game. She later graduated from the University of South Carolina where she was active in the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. While in college she met her husband of 56 years, Ed. After their move to California, Anne taught history to 8th graders in the Alhambra School District and was recognized there as Teacher of the Year.
Anne chaired the first ever “Pops on the Green” at the Rose Bowl for the Symphony Juniors, received the Marino PTA Honorary Service Award, and was named one of the Outstanding Young Women of America. She was also active in the National Charity League and USGA Junior Golf. Her basketball history led her to a successful coaching career. After coaching Arcadia High School for three years, she began the girls’ program at Huntington Middle School. In the team’s second year their record was 24-1 and were recognized as the third best team in the state. As her team grew older and went to high school, so did Anne. As the San Marion High School varsity coach, she was named the Rio Hondo League Coach of the Year in 1983. An avid golfer, Anne, was on the USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Rules Committee for several years. A team captain, tournament chair, new member big sister, and two-time club champion at San Gabriel Country Club, Anne received the Arnold Palmer Award for her service to others in 2019. As a partner with Langdon and Associates, Anne coordinated several special events for the Merrill Lynch investment banking division at locations such as the Masters, the British Open, Wimbledon, and the Olympics.
Surviving is her daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Lee Hoech of Charlotte, NC.
