Donald Edward Ferguson, Sr., 87, of 030 Sunbury Bank Street, Sunbury, NC, died Tuesday, January 15, 2013 in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Mr. Ferguson was born in Chatham Hill, VA and was the son of the late David William and Fannie Blevins Ferguson. Retired from the Army after more than 22 years of service, he was a veteran of World War II, and the Korean and Vietnam Wars. During World War II he saw action in the Pacific Theatre, including the Battles of Manila, New Guinea, and Saipan, and was a driver for many significant Army Generals and notables. His WWII units were the 27th Division, Co. G., 105th Infantry Regiment and the 38th Division, HQ Co., 151st Infantry Regiment. Among the medals he received were the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Badge. After the war he worked as a military policeman, and then upon retirement began a second career as a truck driver. A member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, he also volunteered with Meals on Wheels. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria Lee East Ferguson, and by sons, Ted Alexander Ferguson and Daniel Joseph Ferguson.

Surviving are his daughter, Patti Lee Ferguson and husband Robert A. Parker of Sunbury; three sons, Donald E. Ferguson, Jr. of Chesapeake, VA, David Ferguson and wife Dorothy of Joshua, TX and Timothy Ferguson and wife Peggy of Granbury, TX; and several very special nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in St. Peter’s Episcopal Church by the Rev. Anne Dail. Burial with full military honors will held at a later time in Arlington National Cemetery. Friends may join the family Friday from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, and all other times at the residence.

The family asks that flowers be omitted and contributions in his memory be made to St. Peter’s Church, in care of Roger Ward, P.O. Box 153, Sunbury, NC 27979.
